Your homepage is basically your digital business card, someone lands there and you have mere seconds to convince them to stay or go.

When I work with clients on their web design and conversion copy, the same problems come up again and again.

The homepage is either confusing, way too busy or full of lovely words and images that do not actually tell a visitor what to do next. Everything lives there all at once, which means nothing is really clear or persuasive.

The thing is, your homepage is not meant to hold your entire life’s work, it has one job which is to guide the right people into the next step with you.

And because most of my clients are super short on time, I've decided to put together a simple homepage template that lets you refresh your homepage in an afternoon with clear, easy ti implement instructions.

You can download the template at the bottom of this post, but first let us walk through each section so you know why it is there and what it is meant to do.

Your homepage, section by section

Hero section, top of your homepage

This is the bit people see before they scroll, so it has a lot of heavy lifting to do. In one clear headline and subheadline you want to say what you do, why it matters, and what happens next if they decide to work with you.

Think transformation in the headline, context in the line underneath, then back it up with a strong image that represents your ideal client in their happy after state, plus one clear button that tells them exactly how to get started.

Problem and solution section

Once someone knows what you do, they need to feel like you actually understand what they are dealing with.

This section tells the story of your reader’s current situation, the problem they keep bumping into, and why the usual fixes they have tried have not worked.

Benefits section

Here you move from problem to possibility and show people what is on the other side of working with you.

Rather than listing every feature or process, you pick three core benefits and write them as outcomes, for example feeling confident sharing your work, saving time every week, or finally having a simple plan to follow.

Testimonials section

By this point, your reader is quietly wondering if it really works and if you are the person they can trust with this problem.

This is where your testimonials show up as friendly proof points, sharing short, specific stories from real clients who got the results you have just described. Aim for a mix of voices that answer the doubts people usually have, for example worries about investing, time, or confidence and keep the quotes punchy so they are easy to skim.

Final call to action section

Your homepage should not just fade out, it needs a clear finish line that invites your reader to take the next step.

Here you bring them back to the main result you help them achieve, you ask if they are ready for that change, and you repeat the same simple button from the hero section so there is a consistent path through the page.

Keep this area clean and uncluttered so the focus is on the decision, not on more information. Think of it as standing by the door, opening it and saying, this is the way in if you want it.

Footer

I learned from Donald Miller to call this section the "junk drawer", which I love. Add in any other important site links and navigation, including your site's privacy policy and terms of use here.
